Commercial and Industrial Fencing in Ireland

Industrial yards usually take 2.4 m palisade or 868 twin wire mesh; offices, shops and schools take V mesh or 656. On business land, a new fence is exempt from planning only up to 1.2 m (2 m at most when it replaces a taller one), so a 2.4 m perimeter normally needs permission.

For factories, depots, yards, warehouses, shops, offices and schools. Ireland has 381,973 active businesses.

The rule of thumb: palisade where stock, plant or vehicles sit in a yard, mesh where the site should stay visible to cameras and passers-by, and anti-climb where a fence keeps getting climbed. Many sites mix them: mesh along the front, palisade round the back.

Does a business need planning permission for a fence?

Do I need planning permission for a security fence at my business?

Usually, above 1.2 m. On business and industrial land, a new fence is exempt only up to 1.2 m, or the height of the fence it replaces, and never over 2 m. On rural land, the limit is 2 m (not sheet metal). A 2.4 m palisade is over both, so it normally needs permission. Ask the council for a Section 5 declaration if you're not sure.
