Prices
How much does security fencing cost?
Supply prices are published; installed prices aren't. HERMEQ lists palisade pales from €4.63 ex VAT (€5.69 incl.) and 1.8 m posts from €20.12 ex VAT (€24.75 incl.). Fenceit lists mesh fencing at €25 per metre, VAT not stated. The installed price depends on the ground, access, gates and length, so it's quoted after a site visit.
Do the prices include VAT?
HERMEQ lists ex and incl. 23% VAT. Wire and Fence Depot and Fenceit don't state VAT.
Why no installed prices?
No Irish source we could confirm publishes one. The contractor prices the site.
Planning
Do I need planning for palisade at home?
Usually, yes. Clare County Council's guidance says the exemption for walls and fences around a house covers railings and wooden fences "but not a metal palisade or security fences". HERMEQ, a fencing supplier, says the same: around a house, metal palisade isn't exempted development. Check with your council.
Does a business need planning for fencing?
It depends on the site, its permission and any conditions. Ask the council or apply for a Section 5 declaration.
Choosing a fence
Palisade or mesh?
Palisade is the heavier deterrent. Mesh keeps the site visible to CCTV and looks more open. Both are hard to climb.
What height should a security fence be?
1.8 m or 2.0 m for most frontages and premises, 2.4 m for yards and compounds holding plant or stock.
Galvanised or powder coated?
Galvanised for working sites. Powder coated, over galvanising, where the fence faces the public.
Can fencing go on sloping ground?
Yes. Palisade bays are stepped down the slope, and mesh panels can be stepped too.
How long does installation take?
It depends on the length, the ground and the gates. The contractor gives a timeline with the quote.
Can posts be fixed to concrete instead of dug in?
Yes. Posts with base plates bolt down onto a concrete base. It suits yards with an existing slab.
What's the difference between palisade and railings?
Railings are decorative bars, often around homes and covered by the domestic planning exemption up to set heights. Palisade is a security fence of pointed steel pales, and isn't.
Should gates be part of the quote?
Yes. A vehicle gate is a large item on its own, so price it with the fence, in the same type and finish.
Can I order the materials and fit them myself?
Suppliers like HERMEQ and Wire and Fence Depot sell to the public. Palisade is heavy and the posts must be set true in concrete, so most sites use a contractor.
Do you do temporary fencing for building sites?
Yes. Choose 'Building site' in the quote form and say hire or buy.

- Pace out the length of the fence line, and count the corners
- Decide on the gates: vehicle, pedestrian, or both, and how wide
- Note the ground along the line: soil, stone, tarmac or concrete
- Take a few photos of the line and the access
