Mesh security fencing

See-through, hard to climb and clean-looking. The types, what they suit, and what the panels cost.

Mesh security fencing is welded steel wire panels fixed between posts. You can see through it, so it suits sites watched by CCTV, schools, sports grounds and frontages that should look open. Fenceit lists its Elite mesh fencing at €25 per metre (VAT not stated).

The main types are V mesh (single wire panels with folds for strength) and twin wire (656 and 868), which is stiffer. The closer the mesh, the harder it is to climb or cut.

HERMEQ makes the point directly: where a frontage has to stay open to view or to CCTV, an anti-climb or V mesh fence is the alternative to palisade.

Posts and fixings

Mesh panels are clamped to posts, usually with a clamp bar on the face and security bolts. Posts are either concreted into the ground or bolted down onto a concrete base with a base plate, which suits sites with an existing slab. On ground where posts can't be dug in, HERMEQ lists an on-ground version that stands on concrete blocks. Ask what fixings are used and whether the bolts are tamper-resistant.

Heights

Fenceit's panel is 2.35 m. Mesh is also widely made at lower heights for sports grounds and frontages and higher for compounds. Pick the height for the risk: a frontage that only needs to stop people walking in is different from a yard holding plant and tools.

What an installed price depends on

  • The length of the run and the number of corners
  • Ground conditions: soil, rock, tarmac or concrete
  • Dig-in or bolt-down posts
  • Gates, and whether they're automated
  • Access for machinery and materials
  • Taking down and removing an old fence

We haven't found a published supply-and-fit price for mesh fencing in Ireland that we can stand over, so the contractor prices it from the site.

Questions to ask

  • Which mesh, what wire thickness, and what height?
  • Dig-in or bolt-down posts, and what fixings?
  • What's the finish and its warranty?
  • Are gates included, and in the same mesh?
  • Is the price supply only, or supplied and fitted, and is VAT included?

Questions people ask

How much is mesh security fencing per metre?

Fenceit lists its Elite mesh at €25 per metre, VAT not stated. HERMEQ lists panels from €34.27 ex VAT (€42.15 incl.). Those are supply prices; fitting is extra.

What is 868 mesh fencing?

Twin wire mesh with two 8 mm horizontal wires either side of 6 mm verticals. Stiffer than single wire V mesh, for heavier-duty sites.

Is mesh or palisade more secure?

Both are hard to climb. Mesh keeps the site visible to CCTV, palisade is a heavier deterrent. Close anti-climb mesh is the high-security option.

Can mesh fencing be bolted to concrete?

Yes. Posts with base plates bolt onto a concrete base. On ground where posts can't go in, on-ground systems stand on blocks.

What colours does mesh fencing come in?

Green and black are the usual powder coat colours, as listed by Fenceit and HERMEQ.
